The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN) covers 76,000 of pristine wilderness in the centre of the province of British Columbia. Nestled between Prince George and Prince Rupert the region is a 10 to 12 hour drive from the lower mainland. The region has economic potential for tourism providers.

The transportation route running east to west through the region is Highway 16. Individual Visitor Information Centres within the Region record up to 13,000 visitors stopping at their location per year. This figure does not include the numerous visitors who do not stop at information centres. The peak tourist season occurs from April to October. Visitors travelling to the area often continue on to Prince Rupert or to Yukon or Alaska.

In effort to support the tourism industry, communities within the RDBN have included tourism initiatives as part of their economic development strategies. Communities within the region are working together to attract visitors to the area.

The RDBN's Tourism Plan in 2009 cites the Free Independent Traveler primarily arriving by recreational vehicle or car as the major tourism market for the region. These travelers are looking for soft outdoor recreational opportunities, expanding the opportunities for tourism providers who are able to target this market.

In recent years the region has seen an expansion of the adventure tourism industry. Many feel the adventure tourism industry is in its infancy in the region. New Mountain Bike facilities are attracting national and international riders to "stay and play" in the region. This young demographic are also likely to white-water kayak, mountain or ice-climb, or heli-ski in the region.
