The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako is well positioned to support the expanding mining sector. The region has a well-developed transportation system, including access via Highway 16 to a deep water port at Prince Rupert and the bulk terminal in Stewart. The region is served by the Canadian National Railway line, providing links to terminal points across North America. Energy costs, a well-trained and experienced labour force, and untapped mineral resources make this region attractive for the mining sector.

OPERATING MINES - ENDAKO, MOUNT MILLIGAN AND HUCKLEBERRY

There are currently two fully operational mines within the Region, Endako Mine and Huckleberry Mine. Endako Mine, located 8.5 km southwest of Endako, is an open pit molybdenum mine, employing 360 people. Endako recently completed a mine expansion project, which will increase the life of the mine. Huckleberry Mine, located 120 km south of Houston, is an open pit copper/molybdenum mine, employing 265 people. Huckleberry's Main Zone Optimization (MZO) plan was approved in 2012; the plan will see the life of the mine extended to 2021.

Mount Milligan is a copper and gold mine located 90km north of Fort St. James. Construction is now in its second year and the mine is expected to be operating in 2013. The construction team numbers over 900 employees. When in full production the mine will provide 350 permanent jobs. This project is British Columbia's first major mine construction in over a decade.

PROPOSED MINES - DOME MOUNTAIN

Dome Mountain Mine, located north of Smithers, started extracting ore in 2012. Although not fully operational, the mine employs ten miners, who are stock piling the ore for shipment to a third-party processing facility. Early in 2013, they are expecting to receive permits to allow for the construction of an on-site processing facility.

Major mining exploration sites are found throughout the region. Some sites are currently in the Environmental Assessment Phase. Click here for a map for a complete listing of the Operating Mines and Major Exploration Projects, in BC.
